FetLife – The Social Media Site for the Kinky Set

I tried out FetLife about a year ago and the basic layout of the site left me in the dark, literally. More recently I have gone there and started using the nicely featured interface. I have to report that I also have a friend. Barely Pink http://barelypinkreport.com, she is one of the first of an amazing group of peoples that I have met doing a blog. She is largely responsible for opening up my timid self, feeding the ego, stroking my feelings and bringing out this stronger, more confident, and yes more annoying Cranky 2.0.

With one friend under my belt, I wish, I started to get more familiar with the way things were done there.  I discovered I can’t rant, don’t ask me, but I didn’t feel the need to go running for the hills. I joined a few more groups; the basic communication unit is a group and started to add my voice to the mix. There are some very opinionated people there and I was amazed at the amount and degree of feedback that I received. Overall I think that the average FetLife user is of above average intelligence and or education. The sophistication of the dialogues makes me have to consider what is said. The ages run the full gamut from just legal, this is a site for adults, children are not welcome here, to sophisticated older individuals.

I myself am kind of a clueless geek. I take what most people say at face value and because of this trait have mistaken a joke as a completely serious statement. This type of oops led to an additional friend, another kindred spirit. There are quite a few on the site that in other circumstances might have been friends, even those from the opposite political leanings.

So I attempted to complete my profile, the profile describes you to the group. You can post pictures, an avatar and snapshots important to you. I tried to write about myself and kept coming up blank. One of the followers on my blog looked familiar. I went back to FetLife, it was the same person, and after looking at her profile had a better idea of what I wanted to say. I sent her a message and we have become friends.

I am still learning about the ins and outs of FetLife and can imagine getting lost in that environment. I still find it exciting to add a comment to a thread and see what happens. I have been roundly critiqued and some have defended what I had written. I have initiated a thread and found it gratifying to get input to my ideas, even if they are hated. I have started my own group and I am the proud owner of a FetLife discussion group. It may turn out to be a membership of one, but you have to start somewhere. Even if I am the only user I can put things down there and get them out of my system.

FetLife was founded in January 2008 by John Baku a software engineer in Montreal, Quebec. This is from Wikipedia. FetLife is free to sign up; there is a request for programmers and other design types. It looks like a great bunch of people to work with, if I only had the skill. You can add other features by becoming a paying member and supporting FetLife. I am usually reluctant to sign up for things like this but here I am definitely leaning towards making an exception. You do not have to do this as most of the features are free and you can meet and greet until you pass out.

I can not rate my experience with FetLife any higher. Come on in its terrific. Waste no more time, check out FetLife. Don’t forget to message John and tell him Cranky sent you, that will get you absolutely nothing but I might dig it.
