Here is a sampling from the decode folder on one of my older hard drive backups. These drawings were downloaded from a newsgroup as text. That’s right someone developed a system to use ascii text as an image transport system. First you encode the image that you want to post and then a newsgroup reader would download the parts, even simple drawings had to be divided into many small pieces to post, eventually the reader software got sophisticated enough to download all the parts and decode and combine the pieces back into images. I do believe I manually decoded this batch of images myself.
The good days were a pain in the ass!
